Wildlife Documentary- Planet Earth
(Single Camera Production)
Advantages for Single Camera Production:
One advantage for a wildlife documentary such as BBC's Planet Earth using Single Camera Production would be that it is less intrusive for the animals and their environment. This is both financially and morally better for the reputation of the production company. Wildlife filmmakers make a great attempt to avoid any attention being drawn to them by limiting the amount of human activity in order to avoid any harm and distress to the wild animals who might be threatened by their presence.
There are also creative advantages to SCP such as the it allows the document to have a cinematic quality which otherwise would be ruined if filmed with a multi-camera set up, as the risk of other cameras in the shot will lose the raw, natural representation of animals in their habitat. This cinematic quality is reinforced as SCP allows the camera to focus specifically on one element for example, a hunting chase or animals feeding their young. Single Camera Production is ideal for hunting scenes were a fast predator such as a lion is chasing their prey as it is able to follow motion easier and is faster to set up instantly.
Disadvantages to Single Camera Production:
However, there are disadvantages to Single Camera Production as it does not assure the same coverage. This is a disadvantage as wildlife filmmakers often have to set up and wait for months to hopefully catch a glimpse of a rare species. This means that if the camera is not in position, in the right angle and properly charged then they would have lost the production company all the finance on equipment and time they invested.
Moreover, having multiple camera angles will mean that there is less that the camera focus can expand to not just one angle. The camera will be able to film from the predators perspective and the preys at the exact same time therefore no action will be missed.
