There are many reasons as to why directors and artists choose single camera production for music videos, however the most common is that it is essential when adding a more cinematic feel. This way the music video including the song is well received by the public as it is entertaining, innovative and visually aesthetic. Music Videos are essential for the exposure of the artists and a way to further convey the message their music is advocating and also helps an artist establish their identity. 

Childish Gambino - 'This is America'

The music video for Childish Gambino's, 'This is America' has become a cultural phenomenon due to the sensitive topic matters which are exhibited in the music video and lyrics to the song. In the single camera production, Childish Gambino plays the role of America himself by portraying the violence against African-American communities, police brutality and how entertainment is used to mask the reality and as a distraction.

In this music video, single camera production is a huge advantage as using a steadicam would allow free movement and for Childish Gambino to create a smooth, continuous and free-flowing narrative achieved through a well choreographed dance.  Moreover, the use of all the space available is also essential and single camera production avoids the risk of other cameras getting in the shot.

Moreover, Childish Cambino's dance movements and facial expressions are over exaggerated and seem to model after a famous caricature, Jim Crow who was commonly used in shows during the 20th century in plays where actors performed in blackface which was highly offensive and prejudice. This could have be include in the music video in order to portray to the audience the lack of progression in the country when dealing with the discrimination and deprivation a large members in society face. This is made explicitly clear to the audience as result of how perfectly in sync the dance moves are with the camera movement and tilting which can be done more efficiently when only using one camera to film. 





Aesthetics

Another reason why artists opt to use single camera production for their music videos would be that it makes controlling the aesthic and creative direction easier. This is because the director will only have to assure that the light and scenery is perfect from only one angle and will not have to worry about the aesthetic staying the same from different camera angles.
